What's the difference between embroidery thread and sashiko thread?

While both threads are made up of 6 individual fibers, sashiko threads are woven together, and cannot be separated. This is different from embroidery thread where each of the 6 fibers separate easier.

Both can be used interchangeably, but if using sashiko thread for mending, the stitched lines will maintain shape without the fibers separating.
